At long last, Mother Nature has decided to look favorably on the slopes of the West, where the season has gotten off to a sluggish start in most locations. After a four week run during which time an upper level trough has dominated over the eastern half of the country, the trough has dug into the West for the time being, and that is where the bulk of the cold air is flowing out of Canada. It has been a snowy weekend in the Rockies and Wasatch, and trail counts are rising at long last. The Midwest is experiencing a shot of warmth that will transform some surface conditions, and that same spurt of warmer air will reach up the East coast from the mountains of North Carolina to Quebec early this week. The pattern has been one of volatility of late, especially east of the Rockies, and that volatility will be in evidence right up to the start of the Christmas holiday.
